Sondra was a WAC (Women's Army Corps) assigned to South Post in 1962 and discharged in 1963- she submitted the 5 photos below. As for most of those in Headquarters Company, and barracked at South Post, her duty was in The Pentagon, which was a 5 minute walk from her Barracks 502 and through the tunnel to the Mall (North) Entrance of The Pentagon. She worked for the Office of the Chief, Classifications and Standards Division, Department of the Army Personnel. As for many stationed on South Post, she listed the NCO Club and Service Club dances in the Green Room as her fondest memories, though she mentioned the Post Pool as her second home during her two summers there.
Many who visit this website were WACS stationed at Myer in the early 60s, and Sondra would love to hear from you. You can e mail her at Owensgma@sbcglobal.net. |
ABOVE LEFT AND CENTER: A very rare close up view of the South Post pool, looking southeast, showing just how close the Pentagon was to the post and pool- maybe 500'. The west face of The Pentagon shown was the side hit on 9/11. The tunnel from South Post to The Pentagon is just out of sight to the right of the small utility structure at the top of the photo. Like nearly all of old South Post, the pool was filled in and the area graded, and is now covered with gravestones as part of Arlington Cemetery. Her pool pass is also shown.
ABOVE RIGHT: A view of the South Post NCO Club, looking west toward the original section of Arlington Cemetery and North Post is in the distance.
ABOVE TWO PHOTOS: Sondra is shown in a close up and posing on the steps of Barrack 502, the latter view looking south. |
